Every heated towel rail on this site so far has been drilled to a wall. That page says as much in its own callout, and for a renter it is the end of the conversation - you are not putting four anchors into a bathroom wall you do not own, and a hardwired unit needs an electrician on top.
A freestanding warmer solves that with a plug and a pair of feet. What it does not solve is the thing this category is worst at, which is telling you what it draws.
Three of these five will not tell you their wattage
This is the same failure the wall-mounted rails have and it is worth being blunt about, because it is the only figure that matters for a product you leave switched on. A surface temperature tells you how warm a towel gets. A wattage tells you what it costs to get there, and you cannot derive one from the other.

The Sawlece case is the instructive one. The same manufacturer publishes 180 W on its 5-bar model and nothing at all on its more expensive 6-bar model. It clearly knows the number. It just does not print it on the product where the number would be higher.

For context, the wall-mounted rails on heated towel rails run from a published 75 W, and a full heated drying rack is around 270 W. A freestanding warmer sits between them: more than a slim wall rail, less than a rack built to dry a whole wash. Warming and drying are different jobs
The top temperature in that table splits this page in two, and it is the distinction the marketing blurs. A used bath towel is damp and wants warmth and airflow. A washed towel straight out of a spin holds roughly a pound of water and needs that water driven off.
- 140°F racks - the R FLORY and the NORTTA. Comfortable warm towels, reduced mustiness, and they will take a long time on anything genuinely wet.
- 170°F racks - the two Sawlece models and the LIIAMOAR. Enough heat to dry, with the LIIAMOAR's 360 W the only output here that does it briskly.
- Neither will dry a washed load. Five to twelve bars is a towel rack whatever it costs; a full wash wants a rack, and those are on the best clothes drying racks.

A published wattage is the whole reason this is the top pick. 180 W is a real number you can multiply by your own electricity rate; every competitor here that declines to publish one is asking you to buy a running cost sight unseen.
Five wide flat bars rather than thin round tubes. Flat bars give a towel more contact area, which matters more for drying than the bar count does - two wide bars beat four narrow ones for getting a bath sheet actually dry.
Sawlece sells this rack in matte white and matte black under separate listings with identical published dimensions, identical 180 W and identical feature lists. At the time of writing the black one costs meaningfully more for the same rack. Buy the color you want, but know you are buying a color.

360 W is twice the published output of the Sawlece and it costs twice as much to run - about 6.6 cents an hour against 3.3. That is the trade, stated plainly: this one has the power to drive water out of a wet towel rather than just keep a dry one warm.
Twelve rods across a 35.6 by 23.6 inch frame is the largest heated surface here. Three published temperature bands run to 170°F, and it reaches that in about five minutes.
Anodized aluminum with a claimed threefold improvement in moisture and rust resistance. The anodizing claim is verifiable in the sense that anodized aluminum genuinely does not rust; the threefold figure is the manufacturer's and we have no way to check it.

PTC elements self-regulate: their resistance climbs as they heat, so they level off at a target temperature rather than climbing until a thermostat cuts them. In practice that means faster warm-up and a lower fire risk than a plain resistive coil.
Six minutes to 170°F is the fastest published warm-up here, and the memory function means it comes back at the temperature you left it rather than a default.
What Sawlece will not tell you is what it draws. Its own 5-bar model publishes 180 W and this larger 6-bar one publishes nothing, which is a conspicuous gap in a range that has already demonstrated it knows the number.

Leaving one on
These are designed for continuous operation and several say so outright, but a heating element in a wet room is still a heating element. Every rack here has an overheat cut-off; none publishes a safety certification number. The general rules for running a powered drying product unattended - what to check, and what not to drape over it - are on safety and overnight use.
The timer is the part worth using. A rack left on continuously at 180 W costs about 79 cents a day; the same rack on a four-hour timer costs about 13 cents. Every model here has one, and the only reason not to set it is forgetting.
What we could not tell you
- Wattage for three of the five. Not published, so no running cost is computed for them. This is the defining gap of the category.
- Load rating on any of them. Not one publishes how much wet weight the bars take.
- Drying-line length on any of them. Bar counts are published; linear feet are not.
- Whether the two Sawlece 5-bar colorways differ in any way beyond color. Their published dimensions, wattage and feature lists are identical. If there is a difference, it is not in the listings.
Common questions
Do freestanding towel warmers need to be hardwired?
No - that is the whole point of them. Every rack on this page plugs into a standard outlet and stands on its own feet, so there is no drilling, no anchors and no electrician. That makes them the practical option for a rental bathroom.
How much does a towel warmer cost to run?
About 3.3 cents an hour for the 180 W model here and about 6.6 cents for the 360 W one, at the US average residential rate. Three of the five racks on this page publish no wattage at all, so their running cost genuinely cannot be calculated.
Can a towel warmer dry a wet towel?
The hotter ones can, slowly. A washed towel holds roughly a pound of water, so it wants the 170°F racks rather than the 140°F ones, and the 360 W model is the only one here with the output to do it briskly. None of them will dry a washed load of laundry.
Is it safe to leave a towel warmer on all night?
They are built for continuous operation and every rack here has an overheat cut-off, but a timer is the sensible default - both for safety and because leaving a 180 W rack on all day costs roughly six times what a four-hour cycle does.
