How to dry clothes without a dryer

Most people arrive at this question having just moved into somewhere without a dryer. The good news is that it works fine and costs almost nothing. The bad news is that doing it badly takes two days and makes your apartment damp, and nothing tells you which you are doing until it has already happened.

Step 1: Get the water out before it reaches the rack

This is the step that matters most and the one nearly everyone skips. Water removed mechanically in the washer costs nothing extra and takes minutes; the same water removed by evaporation takes hours.

• Run a second spin cycle. On most machines this is a standalone option. It removes a noticeable amount of additional water for a few minutes of running time.
• Use the highest spin speed the fabric allows. Most cotton is fine at maximum; check the label for anything delicate.
• Do not overload the drum. An overloaded machine spins badly, and clothes come out much wetter.

Step 2: Choose where it dries

Rank the rooms in your home by two things: how much air moves through them, and how much you care if they get humid.

Step 3: Load the rack properly

Spacing is the whole technique. Where two wet garments touch, neither surface is exposed, and the contact patch stays wet long after the rest of the load is dry. Heavy items go on the outer bars where air moves most, small items go onto clip hangers so they stop consuming bar length, and long items go on the top rail so hems clear the floor. Step 4: Move some air

This is the cheapest big improvement available. A fan placed low and angled up through the rack passes air over both faces of every garment. A 100 W fan for eight hours costs about 15 cents at the current US average rate, and it commonly halves drying time.

Step 5: Deal with the moisture

A washer load holds roughly two to five pints of water and every drop of it ends up in your home's air. In summer with a window open that is a non-event. In winter with everything closed, it condenses on the coldest surface in the room, and that is how apartments end up with mold around window frames.

Ventilate while drying, or run a dehumidifier in a closed room. The dehumidifier is the better answer in winter, and it costs about 23 cents a session. Details on indoor humidity and condensation.

Two square feet of floor is roughly a bath mat. That is the entire footprint, and it still takes 16 feet of line, because the tiers go up rather than out.

The 4.3 inch folded depth is the number that matters in a rental. That fits behind a door or between a washer and a wall, which a gullwing rack folded to 8 or 10 inches does not.

The trade-off is bar length. Eleven short bars suit shirts, underwear and socks; a bath towel hung full-width will drape over two tiers and slow both of them down.

2100 cfm at 100 W is the specification that matters. Air movement is the single biggest lever on indoor drying time, and this delivers the most of it per watt of anything here.

One hundred watts for four hours is about 7 cents at the current US average rate. Running a fan alongside an unheated rack is close to the cheapest intervention available.

The three-hour timer means you can start it when you hang the load and not think about it, which is how it ends up actually getting used.

A dehumidifier does not blow air at your laundry; it removes the water your laundry has just put into the room. That is why it dries a closed room full of washing and a fan does not.

158 W is the number to compare against a heated rack. Running it for eight hours costs about 23 cents at the current US average rate - roughly what a 270 W heated rack costs for five.

38 dB is quiet enough to sleep through, which matters because the natural way to use one is overnight in a closed room with the rack.
