A dehumidifier is the single most effective device for indoor drying in a closed room, and the reason is not obvious: it does not touch your laundry at all. It lowers the humidity of the air around it, and dry air pulls water out of wet fabric far faster than saturated air can.

Compressor or thermoelectric - these are different products
This is the most important distinction in this category and it is almost never explained on a listing.

The practical rule: if the listing publishes a tank size rather than a pints-per-day extraction rate, it is almost certainly thermoelectric and it will not dry a laundry load. That is not a defect - it is a different product for a different job, and it is on this page because it is the one people buy by mistake.

The numbers that matter for laundry
- Wattage - sets the running cost, exactly as with a heated rack. Every unit here publishes one.
- Pints per day - the extraction rate. Note it is quoted at 95 F and 90 percent relative humidity, which is a test condition and not your apartment. Expect less in a real room.
- Airflow in cfm - underrated. A unit moving more air through itself also moves more air past your laundry, doing a fan's job at the same time.
- Noise in dB - decides whether you can run it overnight in a room you sleep near.
- Drainage - a continuous hose option means you never think about the tank.
How to use one for drying
- Close the room. This is the opposite of what you do with a fan, and it is the whole point - a dehumidifier works on the air in a sealed volume.
- Put it near the rack, with the outlet pointing at it if the unit has a directional vent.
- Run it for the whole drying period, not for an hour.
- Empty the tank or run a hose. A full tank shuts the unit off and everything stops.
- Do not use it in a cold room. Below about 60 F a compressor unit's capacity drops off sharply.

A dehumidifier does not blow air at your laundry; it removes the water your laundry has just put into the room. That is why it dries a closed room full of washing and a fan does not.
158 W is the number to compare against a heated rack. Running it for eight hours costs about 23 cents at the current US average rate - roughly what a 270 W heated rack costs for five.
38 dB is quiet enough to sleep through, which matters because the natural way to use one is overnight in a closed room with the rack.

Thermoelectric is a genuinely different technology, not a smaller compressor. It has no moving compressor, so it is near-silent, and it extracts far less water per hour.
The listing publishes a tank size, not a pints-per-day extraction rate. Those are not the same number and cannot be compared with the compressor units above.
85 W is real and low. For a small closed bathroom with one rack in it, this is enough. For a bedroom full of wet laundry it is not.
