Drying is evaporation, and there are only four levers on it: the water left in the fabric, the airflow past it, the humidity of the room, and the temperature. Each product in this hub pulls exactly one of those.

The buying order

  1. Clip hangers first. A few dollars, and they move socks and underwear off the rack bars entirely, which frees up a surprising amount of line. See hangers and drying clips.
  2. A fan second. The best value purchase anywhere on this site: it roughly halves drying time for about 15 cents a load. See fans for drying clothes.

Fan or dehumidifier?

It depends entirely on whether the room is open or closed. A fan needs somewhere for the moisture to go - it moves air, it does not remove water. In a closed room a fan eventually just circulates saturated air. A dehumidifier makes the somewhere itself, which is why it is the winter answer. The full comparison is on dehumidifier vs fan.

A dehumidifier does not blow air at your laundry; it removes the water your laundry has just put into the room. That is why it dries a closed room full of washing and a fan does not.

158 W is the number to compare against a heated rack. Running it for eight hours costs about 23 cents at the current US average rate - roughly what a 270 W heated rack costs for five.

38 dB is quiet enough to sleep through, which matters because the natural way to use one is overnight in a closed room with the rack.

What is the best thing to buy to dry clothes faster indoors?

A fan, by a wide margin on value. It costs about 15 cents a load to run and roughly halves the drying time by removing the saturated layer of air sitting against the fabric.

Do you need a dehumidifier to dry clothes indoors?

Only if the room is closed up, which in winter it usually is. In a ventilated room a fan does the job for less. In a closed room a dehumidifier is what keeps evaporation going at all.

Are drying accessories worth buying?

Clip hangers and a fan are, easily. Most of the rest of the category is not, and we say which ones on what you do not need.
