What it actually does

A spin dryer is a centrifuge. The drum spins fast enough that liquid water is thrown out through the drum wall and down a hose, and the fabric is left damp rather than wet. No heat is involved at any point, which is why it cannot shrink, felt or fade anything.

That is a different operation from what a tumble dryer does. A tumble dryer changes water into vapor and puts it somewhere; a spin dryer never changes its state. The full comparison is on spin dryer vs tumble dryer.

1800 rpm is the mid-range of this category

Spin speed is the headline figure for a centrifuge and 1800 rpm sits below the fastest units in the category, which publish figures closer to 3200. More speed removes more water, so this is genuinely the less aggressive option - and the trade is in the name. A softer spin is easier on knitwear and on anything with structure that a hard spin would crease.

What no manufacturer in this category publishes is an extraction percentage - how much of the water actually leaves. Spin speed is a proxy for it and not a measurement of it, and we will not convert one into the other.

17 lb is more than a washer load

The published capacity is 17 lb. A full washer load of mixed cotton is roughly 8 to 12 lb dry and 16 to 25 lb wet after the machine's own spin, so a genuinely full, heavy load will need splitting - but for the typical mixed wash this is one pass rather than two.

Five minutes, and the 90% claim

The Laundry Alternative states that "laundry is 90% dry within 5 minutes". That is the manufacturer's figure, it is not defined against a stated starting moisture content, and we have not tested it. What is not in dispute is the shape of it: a five-minute mechanical step, against 45 minutes of heated tumbling or most of a day on a rack.

Three years is a long warranty here

A three-year manufacturer warranty is published. Most products this site covers publish no warranty statement at all, and for a machine with a motor and bearings spinning at 1800 rpm, that transfer of risk is worth more than it would be on a rack.

What it does not do

• It does not finish the job. The load comes out damp and goes on a rack. Budget for both - the racks are on the best clothes drying racks.
• It does not publish a wattage, so we cannot compute a running cost for it. That is the same gap the whole spin-dryer category has, and it is why no cents-per-load figure appears on this page.
• It is not quiet. A centrifuge at 1800 rpm makes noise, and no decibel figure is published by this or any competing unit.
• It needs somewhere to drain. Water leaves through a hose, which means a sink, a drain or a bucket you remember to empty.

Who it is for

1. No dryer, no hookup, small apartment. This is the case it exists for. Taking most of the free water out mechanically means the rack starts at the fast part of the drying curve instead of the slow one - see how long air-drying takes.
2. Hand-washing, wool and delicates. No heat and a softer spin than a washing machine's, which is the combination those fabrics want.
3. A laundromat household. Fewer paid dryer cycles, or none, depending on how much rack space you have at home.
4. Not: anyone who wants laundry finished. If the goal is folding clothes at the end of a cycle, this is the wrong machine and the listing says so.

What we could not tell you

• Rated wattage. Not published, so no running cost is computed here.
• Actual extraction percentage. The 90% figure is the manufacturer's, with no stated test conditions.
• Noise. No decibel figure from this unit or its competitors.
• How the bearings last. A centrifuge wears at the bearings over years, and we have not owned it. The three-year warranty is the only published signal.
• How it compares against the fastest unit in the category on the shelf today. The 3200 rpm competitor this site also lists was out of stock when we checked on 2026-09-21, which makes the Nina the buyable spin dryer at the time of writing rather than the only good one.

The verdict

A narrow product that does one thing and is honest about the boundary. For a household with no dryer, the wettest hour is the one that defeats indoor drying, and removing most of the free water in five minutes without heat is a real change to how the week works. For anyone expecting dry laundry at the end, the manufacturer has already told you not to buy it.

Its own listing is careful to say this is not a clothes dryer: it does not use heat and it does not finish the job. It shortens the rack time; it does not replace the rack.

Under three square feet of floor, and 24 published feet of line: 8.5 feet of line per square foot. The Honey-Can-Do gullwing manages 4.9. That ratio is the whole argument for a tiered accordion rack in a small home.

Three inches folded is the number that matters in a rental, and it is published - which in this category is rare. Three inches fits behind an interior door or between a washer and a wall; a gullwing folded to eight or ten inches does not.

The trade-off is bar length. Six tiers of short bars suit shirts, underwear and socks; a bath towel hung at full width drapes over two tiers and slows both of them down.

2100 cfm at 100 W is the specification that matters. Air movement is the single biggest lever on indoor drying time, and this delivers the most of it per watt of anything here.

One hundred watts for four hours is about 7 cents at the current US average rate. Running a fan alongside an unheated rack is close to the cheapest intervention available.

The three-hour timer means you can start it when you hang the load and not think about it, which is how it ends up actually getting used.

It is a floor blower, so it is directional. Aim it along the length of the rack, not at one garment.
