Clothes drying racks, compared by the space they take
Five types of unpowered rack, sorted by what they cost you in floor rather than what they cost in dollars.

A drying rack is a piece of furniture you have to store. That is the whole problem, and it is why the specification that decides the purchase is not price and not capacity - it is the pair of numbers describing how much room the rack takes when it is working and how much it takes when it is not.
Almost nobody publishes both. Across the racks on this page, every manufacturer publishes an open footprint and roughly one in four publishes a folded thickness. We print what they publish and mark the rest as not published, because a folded depth you cannot check is the number most likely to end with a rack living permanently in the middle of your living room.
The five kinds of rack, and who each one is for
| Type | Typical open footprint | Solves | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tiered tower | 2-4 sq ft | No floor space; stores in a slot | Short bars, poor with towels |
| Accordion / flat frame | 3 sq ft | Cheap, light, moves room to room | Lower load ratings, bars sag |
| Gullwing | 9-15 sq ft | A whole washer load in one go | Dominates a small room |
| Flat mesh | 4-5 sq ft of surface | Knitwear that must not stretch | One garment at a time |
| Hardwood | 3 sq ft | Delicates that snag on metal | Costs several times a steel rack |
The single most common mistake is buying a gullwing because it holds the most. It does. It also takes nine to fifteen square feet of floor, which in a studio is the difference between a room you can walk through and a room you cannot. Read how much laundry actually fits on a drying rack before you decide you need the big one.
How to choose in about two minutes
- Measure the storage slot first, not the room. Behind a door is about 4 inches. Beside a washer is about 8. Under a bed is about 6. Whatever that number is, it rules out most racks before you look at any of them.
- Decide what you actually dry. Shirts, underwear and socks want many short bars. Towels, jeans and bedding want few long ones. No rack does both well.
- Check the load rating against wet weight, not dry. Wet cotton holds roughly its own weight again in water. A 24 lb rating is about three wet bath towels.
- Then look at price. It is the least informative number on the listing and it is the one everybody starts with.

Our overall ranking is on the best clothes drying racks. If your constraint is floor space specifically, go straight to drying racks for small apartments. If you have no floor at all, the answer is not on this hub - it is in space-saving racks, where the rack goes on a wall, a door or a ceiling instead.

Two square feet of floor is roughly a bath mat. That is the entire footprint, and it still takes 16 feet of line, because the tiers go up rather than out.
The 4.3 inch folded depth is the number that matters in a rental. That fits behind a door or between a washer and a wall, which a gullwing rack folded to 8 or 10 inches does not.
The trade-off is bar length. Eleven short bars suit shirts, underwear and socks; a bath towel hung full-width will drape over two tiers and slow both of them down.
Good
- 16 linear feet from a 2 sq ft footprint
- Folds to 4.3 inches, so it genuinely stores flat
- 44.1 lb rating is generous for the size
- Arrives assembled
Not so good
- Short bars - full-size towels and sheets do not hang cleanly
- Tiered stacking means the lower rows dry slowest without air movement
Skip this if you are mostly drying towels and bedding. Long, heavy items want a wide gullwing, not a tall tower.

Common questions
How much floor space does a clothes drying rack need?
Between two and fifteen square feet, depending entirely on type. A tiered tower takes about two square feet; a full gullwing rack opens to nine or more. The open footprint is published on almost every listing, so check it against your actual room before buying.
What is a clothes horse?
The same thing as a drying rack. It is the older British term and it survives in US listings mainly as a keyword. We use drying rack throughout - see clothes horse vs drying rack.
Do drying racks rust?
Coated and plated racks rust once the coating is chipped, which happens fastest in bathrooms. Stainless steel has no coating to lose and bamboo has no metal to rust, though bamboo absorbs moisture. See drying rack materials.
