Why this rack is worth a page of its own

It is the top pick on drying racks for a laundry room and a pick on three other pages here, and it earns that for one unglamorous reason: it publishes the two numbers that matter, and almost nothing else in its size class does.

Our conversion table on how much laundry fits on a drying rack puts a full mixed load at roughly 45 to 50 linear feet with garments properly spaced. 46 feet lands exactly there, which means one wash, one hang, no second session.

That is the practical case for a gullwing over a tower. A 16 foot tower is a third of a load and means hanging the rest tomorrow.

50 lb is genuine headroom

A full wet mixed load is roughly 16 to 25 lb. A 50 lb rating is therefore about double what you will put on it, which matters because published ratings assume evenly distributed weight and nobody loads a rack evenly - the heavy things go on the end bars and stay there.

Nine and a half square feet is the real cost

The shoe bars are an unusual inclusion

Dedicated shoe bars appear on very few racks in this class. They matter more than they sound: sneakers laid on a flat rod dry slowly and leave marks, and hung by the heel on a purpose-made bar they drain and get air on the inside.

What Honey-Can-Do does not publish

• Folded depth. The single most useful number for anyone in a small home, and it is absent - as it is on most of this market.
• Bar spacing. Which is the specification that most affects drying speed at a given capacity.

Who should buy it

• You wash a full load at a time and want it hung in one pass.
• You have a laundry room, a spare corner or a hallway you can give up while it dries.
• You dry towels and jeans - the 50 lb rating and the wide bars suit heavy fabric.
• You want the wings down most of the time and open on laundry day. A gullwing runs at half width perfectly well.

Who should not

• Studio and dorm residents. Nine and a half square feet is not available to you, and the folded depth is not published so you cannot even plan around storing it.
• Anyone drying mostly bedding. The individual bars are not long enough for an unfolded sheet - see drying racks for sheets and bedding.
• Anyone putting a rack in a permanently damp bathroom. With no published material grade, a stainless rack is the safer purchase.

Open, this is nine and a half square feet - about the size of a two-seat sofa laid on the floor. That is the price of doing a whole load at once, and in a studio it is a real price.

46 feet of line is enough for a standard washer load with the shirts spaced rather than crammed, which is the difference between four hours and nine.

The wings fold down when you only need the middle section, so it can run at half width on a normal day and full width on laundry day.

Six feet wide with both wings out. It is the widest rack here and it buys you 59 feet of line, 13 more than the Honey-Can-Do gullwing.

The load rating does not scale with the line, though: 33 lb against the Honey-Can-Do's 50. More line, less weight per foot - fine for shirts, tighter for towels.

The 20 windproof hooks are the detail that makes it worth using on a balcony, where an unhooked garment ends up on someone else's railing.

The verdict

For a household with somewhere to put it, this is the most completely documented mid-size rack we have catalogued, and the published numbers say it will do the job people buy it for. The gaps - folded depth, bar spacing, material grade - are the same gaps the whole category has, and they are the reason we would not recommend it for a bathroom or a studio.
