The best drying racks for sheets and bedding

Sheets, duvet covers and blankets are the load that makes people conclude indoor drying does not work. They are not especially heavy - a double sheet is about 4 to 5 lb wet, less than two bath towels - and they still take longer than anything else in the basket.

The reason is geometry rather than water content, and once you see it the whole category sorts itself out.

Why bedding is slow: the doubling problem

Drying is evaporation from an exposed surface. A sheet has an enormous surface area, which ought to make it fast - and it would, if the whole of that area were exposed to air.

Fold a 90 inch sheet over a 30 inch bar and you have created a three-layer stack where the inner faces touch each other. Those faces are not exposed to anything. They stay wet long after the outside is dry, and because they are pressed together and warm, they are also where a musty smell starts.

Read the last two columns as the whole buying decision. Every fold roughly doubles the drying time of the folded section, so going from three folds to none is the single biggest change available.

The three specifications that matter, in order

1. Usable span

Not the rack's overall width - the length of the single longest bar you can drape across. A gullwing rack that is 71 inches wide overall may have no individual bar longer than 24 inches, in which case it is a 24 inch rack for bedding purposes. Check the photos for one long top rail rather than a grid of short rods.

2. Height off the floor

A double sheet hung unfolded over a 37 inch bar has roughly 20 inches of fabric pooling on the floor at each end. It picks up dust, it stays wet, and it blocks the airflow underneath the rack. Height and span have to work together, which is why the tall wide racks are the ones on this page.

3. Bar spacing

Bedding is thin, so it dries fast once exposed - but only if the folds are not touching. Wide gaps matter more here than on any other load, because there is so much fabric per item.

Note how few racks publish a span figure separate from overall width. Where a manufacturer publishes only an overall dimension we print that and say so - it is the honest limit of what the listing tells you, and it is the recurring gap across this whole category.

The line alternative, which is usually better

A rack wide enough for a double sheet takes eight feet of floor. A line does the same job for the cost of two wall fixings and no floor at all, which in an apartment is not a close contest.

A 45 foot retractable line strung across a room, a yard or a balcony gives you unlimited effective span - you simply peg the sheet along it. The trade is that a loaded line sags, and on a long span everything slides toward the middle unless you peg it in place. 95 inches is the specification that matters for bedding. A double flat sheet is about 90 inches wide, so this is the only rack on the site it can hang across in a single span rather than doubled over a bar.

Doubling a sheet is what makes bedding slow: the two halves press together and the contact area stays wet for hours after the exposed faces are dry. Span removes the problem rather than managing it.

140 lb rated and stainless, so wet cotton bedding - which is heavy and stays wet a long time - is well within it.

The trade is obvious and severe: nearly eight feet of floor. This is a rack you put up in a room you can give up for the day, not one that lives open in a studio.

The load rating does not scale with the line, though: 33 lb against the Honey-Can-Do's 50. More line, less weight per foot - fine for shirts, tighter for towels.

140 lb is nearly three times the rating of a typical folding rack, and it is the number that matters when a load is mostly denim and terry rather than shirts.

Stainless throughout rather than coated steel. Jeans and towels drip for the first hour and hold water in their seams for many more, so the rack spends longer wet than any other kind of laundry makes it - a coating that chips is a rust bloom waiting to transfer onto a wet white towel.

The 52 to 79 inch retraction is what makes it tolerable in an apartment. It runs narrow on an ordinary day and opens to nearly seven feet on laundry day, so you are not permanently giving up the floor of a full-size rack.

Height is the point. At 45.5 inches the top rail is high enough that a folded duvet cover or a bath sheet hangs clear, which a 37 inch gullwing cannot manage.

Three and a half square feet - narrower than a gullwing and easier to stand in a corridor or against a wall.

50 lb on a single frame with no wings is a genuinely strong rating; wet bedding is heavy and most racks in this price bracket bow under it.

45 feet is a genuine outdoor washing line, not a bathroom accessory. Over that span you will want an intermediate support or you will get a deep curve in the middle.

PVC rather than stainless. It is fine outdoors and it is gentle on fabric, but it is not the grade you want permanently wet in a shower cubicle.

No published weight rating. On a 45 foot span, sag rather than breakage is the practical limit anyway.

Three square feet open, and the accordion frame collapses to something you can carry one-handed. At 4.5 lb it moves from bathroom to bedroom without a second thought.

The 32 lb rating is the lowest of the standing racks here, and it is honest rather than stingy: one washer load of shirts is nowhere near 32 lb wet, but a load of wet towels can be.

Technique for bedding specifically

1. Spin it twice. Bedding holds a lot of water for its weight and it is the load where a second spin buys the most time.
2. Hang it over the longest single bar you have, not folded across a short one.
3. Shake it out hard first. A sheet that goes on the rack crumpled dries crumpled, and it will need ironing.
4. Rotate it once. Move the fold line so the section that was over the bar is exposed for the second half.
5. Peg the corners on a line. Unpegged, a sheet slides into a heap in the middle of the span and you have recreated the folding problem.
6. Give it airflow. A large flat surface responds very well to a fan - see fans for drying clothes.
