A retractable line is the only product in this category with essentially no footprint at all when it is not in use. Retracted, it is a small box on a wall; extended, it is more drying length than most racks.
Sag is the whole problem
A loaded line curves. As it curves, everything slides toward the middle and ends up touching, and touching garments are the single biggest cause of slow drying and musty smells. That is why a tightener is worth more than extra feet of line.

Steel grade actually matters here
Two of these lines publish 304 stainless. That grade is the one that survives a shower cubicle without pitting, and pitting on a clothesline is not cosmetic - it snags fabric and, once it starts rusting, marks whatever is hanging on it. A PVC-coated line is fine outdoors and wrong in a wet room.

Both ends need something to fix to
This is the constraint people miss. A retractable line needs a casing screwed to one wall and a hook or bracket screwed to another, and both have to be solid. In a bathroom, tile means a masonry bit and the right anchor. There is no no-drill version of this product that will hold a wet load.

A sagging clothesline puts every garment in the middle touching every other garment, which is how a line that should dry in five hours takes twelve. The tightener is the whole product.
40 lb over 16.4 feet is a genuinely useful rating - that is a full load of shirts pegged with space between them.
Retracted, it is a small box on a wall. Across a bathtub or a balcony it is the highest capacity-to-visual-footprint ratio available.

304 stainless is the grade that survives a shower cubicle. Cheaper lines use plated wire that rusts at the first nick and then marks everything hung on it.
A double line doubles the hanging surface for the same span, which is the practical difference from the single-line retractables.
No published weight rating, which is the gap. For a shower rail carrying swimwear and delicates it is unlikely to be the limit, but it is absent and we will not invent it.

Nine feet spans a standard shower cubicle or a bathtub with room to spare, which is where most apartment drying actually happens.
Same 304 stainless grade as the more expensive lines, at a fraction of the price - the saving is in the casing and the tensioner, not the wire.
Without a tightener, expect some sag once the line is loaded. On a nine-foot span that is far less of a problem than on sixteen.

45 feet is a genuine outdoor washing line, not a bathroom accessory. Over that span you will want an intermediate support or you will get a deep curve in the middle.
PVC rather than stainless. It is fine outdoors and it is gentle on fabric, but it is not the grade you want permanently wet in a shower cubicle.
No published weight rating. On a 45 foot span, sag rather than breakage is the practical limit anyway.

Common questions
Are retractable clotheslines any good indoors?
Very, over a bathtub or a shower. They give more drying length than most racks with essentially no footprint when retracted. The two things to check are the steel grade and whether the line has a tightener.
How much weight can a retractable clothesline hold?
Where it is published, 40 lb. Several manufacturers publish no rating at all. In practice the limiting factor indoors is sag rather than breakage.
Do retractable clotheslines sag?
All of them do under load. Models with a line tightener sag much less, and shorter spans sag far less than long ones - doubling the span roughly quadruples the curve.
Can you install a retractable clothesline without drilling?
Not one that will hold wet laundry. Both the casing and the far hook need solid fixings. If you cannot drill, a tension rod or an over-door rack is the alternative.
