The indoor clotheslines page on this site calls fixed rope "the one that disappoints", and it does. Two eye bolts and a length of rope is the cheapest drying line there is, and within a week it is a curve with all your laundry piled in the low point. This page is about why that happens and which line does not do it.
It is not the eye bolts. It is almost always the rope.
Why a fixed line sags
- The material stretches. Cotton and most synthetic rope elongate under load, and a wet load is heavy - a single soaked bath towel is roughly a pound of water. Hang a wash on a rope line and it lengthens, and it does not fully recover when you take the washing down.
- The ends creep. Knots tighten and slip, and a line tied round an eye bolt settles into its own knot over the first few loads. Even a line that does not stretch loses tension this way.
- Span multiplies both. Sag grows with distance. Over six feet it is barely visible; over twenty it is the whole problem.
The fix follows directly. A steel core does not meaningfully stretch, which removes the first cause. A turnbuckle lets you wind tension back in after the ends settle, which removes the second. Rope can manage neither.
The three things to choose

There is a real trade inside the coating choice. Slick PVC or vinyl protects the steel and wipes clean, and it is also the hardest surface for a clothespin to grip - pegs slide along a thin coated cable toward the low point. A thicker coated line gives the peg more to bite. Cotton rope grips best of all and stretches worst. There is no line that does everything, and the pegs themselves are compared on clothespins.

Read that last column carefully. Two lines publish nothing. One publishes a working load and a break strength. One publishes a break strength only. And one publishes a figure without saying which kind it is. Those are five different claims, and only one of them tells you what you can actually hang.
Indoors, outdoors, and the room in between
- A bathroom wants 304 stainless under a coating, because the coating will nick and a galvanized core then rusts in permanently wet air. Only one line here publishes that grade.
- Outdoors year round wants coated steel rather than cotton, because a cotton line that never dries grows mildew and transfers it to your laundry.
- A balcony or a short indoor run is where cotton rope is genuinely fine - short enough that stretch barely shows, and taken down often enough to stay dry.
- If you cannot drill at all, none of these is the answer; a retractable reel or a tension rod is. Those are on retractable clotheslines and indoor clotheslines.

The turnbuckle is the whole reason this is the top pick. A line sags for two reasons - the material stretches, and the ends creep - and a turnbuckle takes up both after installation. Everything else on this page asks you to pull it tight once and hope.
It comes as a complete fixing kit: 12 eye screws, 12 wall plugs, 12 cable clamps, 10 thimbles and a screwdriver alongside the wire. That is 53 pieces, and it means the clamps match the wire gauge rather than being whatever the hardware store had.
What it does not publish is a load rating of any kind. For a clothesline the practical limit is almost always the eye screw pulling out of the wall rather than the wire failing, so where you fix it matters more than the missing figure.

Two figures, and the difference between them is the most useful thing on this page. Break strength is what snaps the line in a test. Working load limit is what you are meant to hang on it. Here they are 150 lb and 30 lb - a five-to-one margin - and a rope that only publishes the bigger number is inviting you to load it to failure.
The cotton half of the blend is why people still buy rope: it grips a clothespin and holds a knot, which slick coated wire does not. The polyester half is there to cut the stretch that makes a pure cotton line sag in the middle.
Low stretch is not no stretch. Braided rope will still settle after the first wet load, which is the failure the indoor clotheslines page describes, and it is why this is the second pick rather than the first.

304 stainless under the coating is the specification that matters in a wet room. A coating protects a galvanized core until it nicks, and a clothesline rubbed by pegs every week will nick. Once it does, 304 does not rust and a galvanized core does.
7x7 strand construction - seven strands of seven wires - is the flexible build, which is what you want for a line that runs round a pulley or gets retensioned rather than one that stays dead straight.
The 480 lb figure is published as a "load-bearing strength" without saying whether that is a break or a working load. We print it as written and do not treat it as a safe hanging weight, because the Extreme Max on this page shows those two numbers can differ by a factor of five.

This is the one on the page actually made to be a clothesline. At 3.5 mm it is thick enough to give a clothespin something to bite, which the thin cables here are not, and the steel core means it does not stretch the way rope does.
It cuts to length and rolls up, so it is the obvious buy for replacing a sagging line on a retractable reel, a pulley system or a pair of eye screws you already have.
RIOOP publishes no strength figure at all - not working load, not break. That is a real gap, and it is the reason this sits below the Elsjoy kit despite being purpose-made.

1,670 lb is a break strength, and it is the figure most likely to be misread on this page. It is not what you can hang on the line; it is what snaps it under test. No working load limit is published, so the safe figure is unknown - and for laundry it is also irrelevant, because the eye screw at either end will fail long before this cable does.
Where the gauge genuinely matters is span. A long outdoor run between two posts sags under its own weight plus a wet load, and a stiffer 3/16 in cable sags less over distance than a thin one.
Clear PVC coating shows the cable underneath, which some people prefer and some find looks industrial. It is sold for deck railings and guy wires as much as for laundry, and it looks it.

Installing one so it stays tight
- Fix into something solid. A stud, a masonry anchor rated for the load, or a post. The line is rarely what fails.
- Put a turnbuckle at one end. Leave it mostly open when you install so there is thread left to take up slack later.
- Tension it, load it, then tension it again. Every line settles on its first wet load. Wind the turnbuckle in once afterward and it will hold.
- Use thimbles where wire loops round an eye. A tight bend without a thimble kinks the wire and is where it eventually frays.
What we could not tell you
- Working load limit for four of the five. Only one line publishes it. It is the figure you actually need and it is the one this category leaves out.
- Whether the Flngr's 480 lb is a break or working figure. The listing calls it load-bearing strength and does not say.
- Steel grade for the three coated steel lines other than the Flngr. Not published, so how they behave once the coating nicks is unknown.
- How much each line actually stretches. Cotton/polyester is described as low stretch; nobody publishes an elongation percentage.
Common questions
What is the best rope for a clothesline?
A steel-core coated line rather than rope, if sag is your problem - steel does not stretch under a wet load. If you want traditional rope for grip and a softer surface, a cotton/polyester blend is the better compromise than pure cotton, and pick one that publishes a working load limit.
Why does my clothesline sag?
Two reasons: the material stretches under wet laundry, and the knots or ends creep and settle. A steel-core line fixes the first. A turnbuckle at one end fixes the second, because it lets you wind tension back in after the line settles on its first loads.
Is clothesline wire better than rope?
For sag, yes - a steel core barely stretches. For grip, rope is better, because a clothespin holds a textured cotton surface far more firmly than slick coated wire. Wire is the better default for a long or permanent line; rope is fine for a short one you take down often.
How much weight can a clothesline hold?
Check the working load limit, not the break strength. The one line on this page that publishes both rates 30 lb working and 150 lb to break. In practice the eye screws or anchors at each end usually give out before a reasonable line does, so fix them into something solid.
Will a metal clothesline rust onto my clothes?
Only once the coating is damaged and the core underneath is not stainless. Pegs nick coatings over time, so in a bathroom or damp outdoor spot choose 304 stainless under the coating. Galvanized steel resists rust for a while and then marks laundry once it starts.
