Three pages on this site tell you to budget for clothespins and none of them has ever said which. This is that page. It is a two-dollar purchase that decides whether a fifty-dollar clothesline works, and it has more going on than it looks.
The thing to understand first: a clothespin is two materials, not one. There is the body, which is wood or plastic or steel, and on almost every pin there is a separate steel spring. They fail independently, and on the cheap ones the spring goes first.
The three materials, and how each one fails

That table is the whole decision. If your line is indoors, wood is the correct answer and paying more is paying for durability you will never use. If your line is outside all year, wood will eventually stain a white shirt and plastic will eventually snap, and stainless is the thing that is still working in five years.
The rust mark nobody warns you about
What these listings actually publish
Very little, and inconsistently. Across the five products here, exactly one publishes a grip strength, one publishes a wire gauge, and one publishes a steel grade. No two publish the same specification, which makes a like-for-like comparison impossible and is worth saying out loud rather than papering over.
- Grip strength - published on one pin, at 3 lb each. This is the figure that decides whether a wet towel stays on the line, and four of the five will not tell you.
- Wire gauge - published on one pin, at 2.5 mm. On a metal pin the gauge is the grip: thicker wire, stiffer spring.
- Steel grade - published on one pin, as 304. Everything else says "stainless steel" or says nothing, which is the same gap the drying racks have on stainless steel drying racks.
- UV resistance - published on none of them, including both plastic products. Sunlight is the thing that kills plastic pins and not one listing addresses it.
How many you actually need
The load composition there is the same one used on how much laundry fits on a drying rack, so the two pages agree. If you dry on a rack rather than a line you need far fewer pins - a rack holds most things over a bar - and what you want instead is clip hangers for the small items, which are on hangers and drying clips.

Three pounds per pin is the only published grip figure in this group, and it is the number that decides whether a wet towel stays on the line. A soaked bath towel is roughly a pound of water plus the towel; two pins hold it comfortably.
A hundred pins is enough to peg several full loads, which is the right quantity for wood specifically - wooden pins are consumable. They swell, the grain raises, and eventually a spring rusts through.
FSC-certified birch, which is a sourcing claim rather than a performance one. What matters for drying is that birch is a dense hardwood, so it resists the splitting that kills cheaper softwood pins after a season.

Wire gauge is the specification that decides a metal pin's grip, and 2.5 mm is the only gauge anyone in this group publishes. Thicker wire means a stiffer spring, which is what keeps a soaked towel on the line when the wind gets under it.
3.4 inches of jaw takes a doubled towel hem or a jeans waistband - the two things that defeat a standard 2.9 inch wooden pin.
A storage bag comes with the 20 pins, which sounds like packaging and is actually the point: metal pins left clipped to an outdoor line collect grit, and the bag is what stops that.

304 is the grade worth having and almost nothing in this category names it. Everything else here says "stainless steel" or nothing at all, and the racks on this site do not publish a grade either - so a clothespin that prints 304 is doing something unusual.
3.7 inches long, with a hook built into the tail. The hook is the reason to pick this one over a plain wire pin: it hangs off a line, a rail or a rack bar as well as clamping to it, which is how you dry a single item without opening a whole rack.
Twelve pins to a pack, which is the fewest here by a wide margin. These are not the pins you peg a whole wash with - they are the ones you keep for the things that matter, alongside a bulk pack of something cheaper.

The listing names the failure it is designed against: rust-resistant springs. On a cheap plastic pin the plastic outlives the spring, the spring stains, and the pin becomes something you throw away rather than something you use.
3.5 inches long and sold explicitly for jeans, sweaters and what the listing calls water-laden articles. That is an unusually specific claim for this category and it matches the dimensions.
Thirty pins for a price that buys a hundred wooden ones. You are paying for the spring and the plastic gauge, and whether that is worth it depends entirely on whether your line is in the sun.

Pins left clipped to the line are pins sitting in UV and rain between washes, which is most of their life. A bag is not an upsell here; it is the difference between replacing plastic pins every second summer and not.
The swivel hook is the detail that makes it usable. A bag that slides along the line as you peg means you are not walking back to a basket every three items.
The listing gives two different sizes - 11 by 15 inches in the title and 11 by 14 in the specification table. Neither changes the useful figure, which is that it holds about 100 medium pins.

The cheapest thing that makes them last
Pins spend most of their life not being used, and where they spend it decides how long they survive. Clipped to an outdoor line, they sit in sun and rain between washes - which is exactly the exposure that embrittles plastic and rusts springs. In a bag on the line or a drawer indoors, they do not.
That is why a bag is one of the five picks here rather than a footnote. It is the cheapest product on this page and it roughly doubles the life of the most expensive one.
What we could not tell you
- Grip strength for four of the five. Only the birch pins publish one. It is the single most useful number a clothespin could give you.
- UV rating for either plastic product. Not published anywhere, despite sunlight being the failure mode that defines plastic pins.
- Steel grade for the wire pins. They publish a 2.5 mm gauge and no grade, so how they will behave in coastal air is unknowable.
- How long any of them last. That is years of weather and we have not owned them. What we can do is name the failure mode of each material, which is what this page does instead.
Common questions
What are the best clothespins for outdoor use?
Stainless steel. Wooden pins hold water and their steel springs rust from inside the wood, which eventually marks wet white cotton. Plastic pins go brittle under UV and snap, usually in their second summer. Stainless does neither and costs several times more per pin.
How many clothespins do I need for a load of laundry?
Around 38 for a modest mixed load, pegging each item at two points. That makes a 100-pack about two and a half loads and a 30-pack slightly under one, which is why wooden pins are sold in bulk and metal ones are not.
Are wooden or plastic clothespins better?
Indoors, wood - it grips well, is gentle on fabric and is cheap in quantity. Outdoors in sun, neither is ideal: plastic embrittles under UV and wood's spring rusts. Wood is the better indoor default and stainless is the better outdoor one.
Why do my clothespins leave rust marks?
The spring, not the body. Almost every wooden and plastic clothespin has a steel spring through it. Wood holds moisture against that spring, it rusts where you cannot see it, and the mark transfers to the next wet white garment. Stainless pins have no separate part to rust.
Do you need clothespins if you use a drying rack?
Far fewer. A rack holds most garments over a bar without pegging. What you do need for socks, underwear and small items are clip hangers, which hold them in vertical space instead of eating bar length.
