How long does it take clothes to air dry?

The honest caveat first: drying time is a function of your room, not of your laundry. The ranges below are wide because a warm ventilated living room and a cold closed bathroom are genuinely different by a factor of three or four.
What we can do is state the assumptions, show how each variable moves the number, and give you a table you can adjust rather than another page that says it depends and stops there.

The assumptions behind those figures
- The load has been spun at a normal washer spin speed. Clothes that have only been rinsed and wrung take far longer than anything in this table.
- Garments are spaced apart and not touching. Overlapped laundry easily doubles these figures.
- A cold room means unheated in winter, roughly 50 to 60 F. A warm room means normally heated, roughly 68 to 72 F.
- Still air means a closed room with no fan and no open window.
- With a fan means a fan moving air through the rack, not merely present in the room.
- Dry means dry to the touch throughout, including seams, waistbands and pockets - which are the last places to finish.

Note where heat comes in that ranking. It is real but it is not first, and it is the most expensive of the four to add deliberately. That is the argument for buying a fan before a heated rack.
Why jeans and towels are so much slower
It is mass of water per unit of surface area. A t-shirt is thin, so most of its water is close to a surface the air can reach. Denim and terry towelling are thick and dense - much more water, much of it far from any exposed face, and the last of it comes out of seams and hems where there is barely any airflow at all.
How to tell when it is genuinely dry
- Check the seams, not the flat panels. Double-thickness fabric is always last.
- Check waistbands and cuffs, where elastic and multiple layers hold water.
- Check pockets. A dry pair of jeans with damp pockets is not dry.
- Feel for cold, not for wet. Fabric that is still evaporating feels cool because evaporation removes heat. That is the most reliable test.

2100 cfm at 100 W is the specification that matters. Air movement is the single biggest lever on indoor drying time, and this delivers the most of it per watt of anything here.
One hundred watts for four hours is about 7 cents at the current US average rate. Running a fan alongside an unheated rack is close to the cheapest intervention available.
The three-hour timer means you can start it when you hang the load and not think about it, which is how it ends up actually getting used.
It is a floor blower, so it is directional. Aim it along the length of the rack, not at one garment.

A dehumidifier does not blow air at your laundry; it removes the water your laundry has just put into the room. That is why it dries a closed room full of washing and a fan does not.
158 W is the number to compare against a heated rack. Running it for eight hours costs about 23 cents at the current US average rate - roughly what a 270 W heated rack costs for five.
38 dB is quiet enough to sleep through, which matters because the natural way to use one is overnight in a closed room with the rack.
This is a compressor unit, not a thermoelectric one, which is why it can pull 28 pints where the small desktop units manage a fraction of that.

A washing machine's spin cycle leaves clothes holding a lot of water. A dedicated spin dryer at 3200 RPM removes much more of it mechanically, and mechanical water removal is far cheaper than evaporating the same water with heat.
The practical effect is on the clock, not the bill: laundry that goes onto the rack already damp rather than wet finishes hours earlier.

Common questions
How long does it take for clothes to air dry indoors?
In a normal heated room with still air, roughly 6 to 10 hours for a t-shirt and 18 to 30 for jeans or a towel. Moving air with a fan roughly halves both.
How long do clothes take to dry with a fan?
About half as long as in still air. A t-shirt drops from 6 to 10 hours to around 3 to 5, and jeans from 18 to 30 hours to around 10 to 16.
Why do jeans take so long to air dry?
Denim is dense, so it holds far more water per unit of exposed surface, and much of that water sits in seams and hems where almost no air reaches. The panels dry hours before the seams do.
How do you know when air-dried clothes are dry?
Feel the seams, waistbands and pockets rather than the flat panels, and check for coldness rather than wetness - fabric that is still evaporating feels cool to the touch.
Do clothes dry faster in a warm or a cold room?
Warm, by roughly 1.5 to 2 times. But air movement is a bigger lever than temperature and much cheaper to add.
