A heated drying rack is a normal folding rack with a low-power heating element in the bars. It does not tumble, it does not vent, and it does not get hot enough to damage fabric - the ones here publish surface temperatures between 111 and 141 degrees Fahrenheit.

The question everyone actually has is what it costs to leave on. That answer requires exactly two numbers: the rack's rated wattage and your electricity rate. We publish both, and we publish the multiplication.

The problem with this category

Of the six heated racks we surveyed on Amazon US, three publish a rated wattage and three publish only a surface temperature range. A temperature tells you nothing about running cost. Where a wattage is missing, we mark it not published rather than inferring one, and that gap is the most useful thing on the comparison page.

270 W is a published, checkable number, and it is the reason this is the top pick. Everything else in the compact class publishes a temperature range instead, which cannot be turned into money.

At the current US average rate a 270 W rack costs about 5 cents an hour to run. Five hours is roughly 25 cents - less than a fifth of what the same load costs in a tumble dryer.

The 2 inch folded thickness is the other reason it suits an apartment: it goes behind a door, which a rigid heated tower does not.

How much electricity does a heated drying rack use?

It depends entirely on the rated wattage. A 270 W rack draws 1.35 kWh over a five-hour session, which is about 25 cents at the June 2026 US average of 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour. A 1300 W model draws 6.5 kWh over the same period.

Do heated drying racks work?

Yes, and modestly. They raise the surface temperature of the bars, which speeds evaporation. They do not tumble or vent, so they are much slower than a dryer and they put the same moisture into your room that an unheated rack does.

Are heated drying racks cheaper than a tumble dryer?
