Radiator drying racks

Every other heated product on this site has a wattage and therefore a cost per hour. A radiator rack has neither. It is a frame that hooks over a heat source you are already running, which makes it the only genuinely free way to add heat to indoor drying.

How to tell whether this applies to you

The measurement that decides it is the depth of the radiator's top edge. Every clamp-style rack here publishes a bracket range, and the common one is 1.2 to 5.1 inches. Measure before you order - it is the only specification that matters for fit.

The cost argument, honestly stated

A radiator rack has no running cost of its own. It is not, however, entirely free, and it would be dishonest to leave it there.

A radiator covered in wet laundry transfers heat into the laundry instead of into the room, and it blocks the convection current the radiator relies on to circulate warm air. A thermostat in that room reads a cooler space and runs the heating longer. You are not paying for the drying directly; you are paying for it in slightly longer heating cycles.

That is a much smaller cost than an element - and it is a real one. The way to minimize it is a rack that holds laundry near the radiator rather than draped flat across its whole face, which is exactly what the clamp-style racks do and what a towel thrown over the top does not.

The specifications

Not one manufacturer in this group publishes a load capacity, which is the standing gap in the clamp-rack category. These are shirts-and-socks products; treat anything heavier as outside what the listings support.

Two shapes, and the one to choose

• Shallow hook-over rails project three or four inches and hang laundry down the face of the radiator. Best in a narrow hallway, and they hold the least.
• Clamp racks with adjustable brackets stand out further and hold considerably more. They also fit railings, doors and windowsills, so they earn their keep in summer when the heating is off.

For most people the clamp rack is the better buy for exactly that reason - it is a radiator rack in January and a balcony rack in July. The same products appear on balcony drying racks for their warm-weather use.

Safety, briefly

1. Do not drape laundry directly over an electric panel heater or a fan heater. These racks are for hot-water and steam radiators, which run at far lower surface temperatures.
2. Do not cover a radiator's whole face if you can avoid it - that is the arrangement that most disturbs the convection the system depends on.
3. Check plastic fittings. Several racks in this category use ABS end caps that sit directly against the heat source. Lift the rack off when nothing is on it.

The 1.2 to 5.1 inch bracket range is the fit specification, and it is the reason this format works on a radiator at all. Measure the depth of your radiator's top edge before ordering - that is the number that decides it, not the rack's width.

Six inches wider than the small version, which is roughly two more shirts. On a radiator, width is the constraint because the heat source underneath is a fixed length.

Aluminum at 1.3 lb. It will not rust and it is light enough to lift off with one hand when the heating comes on and you want the radiator back.

Tangkula publishes no load capacity for any rack in this family. Over a radiator with shirts and socks that is academic; do not treat it as a towel rack.

The extension range is published in centimeters, which is a fair signal that this product was designed for a market where panel radiators are standard. It converts to roughly 16.5 to 28.3 inches, and it is sold on Amazon US.

Five rods rather than one rail, so it takes considerably more than the single-bar radiator products - and the extension means one unit fits a narrow bathroom radiator or a wide hall one.

The detachable sock clip is a genuinely good detail. Socks and underwear are what clog a small rail, and clipping them separately frees the rods for shirts.
