The arithmetic
270 W ÷ 1,000 = 0.27 kW. 0.27 kW × 5 h = 1.35 kWh. 1.35 kWh × 18.34¢ = 24.8¢ per session.
Against a tumble dryer
A standard electric dryer uses about 2.5 kWh a load, which at 18.34¢/kWh is 45.9¢. This rack saves 21.1¢ a load, so a $150 rack pays for itself in 712 loads - about 238 weeks at 3 sessions a week.

Every figure on this page defaults to 18.34 cents per kilowatt-hour, the US average residential retail electricity price for June 2026, published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration in Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.3. We retrieved it on 2026-09-02. Your own rate is on your bill and it may differ by a factor of two either way - Hawaii and much of New England are far above this average, and much of the Pacific Northwest and the South are below it. Against a tumble dryer
A standard vented electric dryer uses roughly 2.5 kWh for a full load. At 18.34 cents that is about 46 cents. We use the low end of the published range deliberately, so the comparison never flatters the drying rack.

The row that surprises people is the 1300 W rack, which costs more per load than the tumble dryer it is meant to replace. High-wattage heated racks are bought for convenience in an apartment without a dryer hookup, not for savings, and it is worth being clear about which one you are buying.
Break-even against a dryer you already own
That number is the honest one, and it is not flattering. A heated rack does not pay for itself quickly against a dryer you already own. It pays for itself immediately against a laundromat, and it is bought most often by people who simply do not have the option of a dryer.
Against a laundromat
A laundromat dryer cycle is commonly two to four dollars. Against 25 cents on a heated rack, a $150 rack pays for itself in roughly 40 to 65 dryer cycles - a few months of weekly laundry. That is the comparison that actually applies to a renter without a machine.
What the wattage does not tell you
- Drying time. Wattage sets the running cost per hour, not how many hours you need. Room temperature, humidity and airflow do that - see how long air-drying takes.
- Whether a cover is fitted. A cover traps the warm air and cuts the hours substantially, which changes the cost per load far more than the wattage does.
- Where the moisture goes. All of it goes into your room. The rack does not vent. See indoor humidity and condensation.

270 W is a published, checkable number, and it is the reason this is the top pick. Everything else in the compact class publishes a temperature range instead, which cannot be turned into money.
At the current US average rate a 270 W rack costs about 5 cents an hour to run. Five hours is roughly 25 cents - less than a fifth of what the same load costs in a tumble dryer.
The 2 inch folded thickness is the other reason it suits an apartment: it goes behind a door, which a rigid heated tower does not.
SHARNDY publishes no load capacity. The frame is aluminum and light; treat it as a shirts-and-underwear rack rather than a bedding rack.

The cover is what changes the physics. Trapping warm air around the garments is why this dries a load in hours rather than most of a day, and it is also why it does not simply dump that moisture into your room.
1300 W is nearly five times the SHARNDY's draw. At the US average rate that is about 24 cents an hour, so a three-hour cycle costs roughly 72 cents - still less than a tumble-dryer load, but no longer trivial.

A dehumidifier does not blow air at your laundry; it removes the water your laundry has just put into the room. That is why it dries a closed room full of washing and a fan does not.
158 W is the number to compare against a heated rack. Running it for eight hours costs about 23 cents at the current US average rate - roughly what a 270 W heated rack costs for five.
38 dB is quiet enough to sleep through, which matters because the natural way to use one is overnight in a closed room with the rack.
This is a compressor unit, not a thermoelectric one, which is why it can pull 28 pints where the small desktop units manage a fraction of that.

2100 cfm at 100 W is the specification that matters. Air movement is the single biggest lever on indoor drying time, and this delivers the most of it per watt of anything here.
One hundred watts for four hours is about 7 cents at the current US average rate. Running a fan alongside an unheated rack is close to the cheapest intervention available.
The three-hour timer means you can start it when you hang the load and not think about it, which is how it ends up actually getting used.
It is a floor blower, so it is directional. Aim it along the length of the rack, not at one garment.
