Small items are the reason a rack fills up. A pair of socks uses about three inches of bar length and takes up the same space whether it is on a rack or on a clip, except that a clip hanger occupies vertical space that was empty anyway.

Move a load's worth of socks and underwear onto clip hangers and you free up several feet of rack line for the bulky items that actually need it. On a 16 foot compact rack that is a meaningful fraction of its total capacity, for a few dollars.

What separates them

Clip count and frame count

Sixty clips across six hangers gives you six hooks to hang from. Twenty-six clips on one frame gives you one. Which is better depends on how many hooks and rails you actually have - in a bathroom with one shower rod, one frame is easier; in an apartment with hooks scattered around, six hangers spread the load and dry faster.

Wire grade

Solid stainless at 4 mm is what the better hangers use, and it matters: plated wire rusts at the clip spring first, and the first thing you notice is a rust mark on a white shirt. Plastic clips do not rust at all but go brittle in sunlight over a long enough period.

The hook

A locking or windproof hook is the difference between a hanger that stays on a balcony rail and one that ends up on the ground below. Indoors it matters less, though a swivel hook lets you turn the frame to face a fan, which is a genuine advantage.

How to use them well

  1. One item per clip. Two socks in one clip means a wet contact patch that stays wet.
  2. Hang them where air moves, not tucked behind the rack. A frame of socks in still air is the slowest thing in the room.
  3. Clip socks at the toe, so the cuff opening points down and drains.
  4. Use them on rails you already have - a shower rod, a closet rail, a door hook, the rack itself.
  5. Do not clip fine knitwear. Metal clips leave marks; knitwear dries flat - see sweater drying racks.

Seropy Clothes Hanger with 10 Clips, 6-Pack

Small items are what actually fills a rack. Sixty clips move every sock, every pair of underwear and every bra off the rack bars and into vertical space that was empty.

4 mm solid stainless rather than plated wire. Plated clip hangers rust at the clip spring first and then mark the next white shirt you hang on them.

The locking hook matters on a balcony or by an open window, where an unlocked hanger of socks becomes a neighbor's problem.

Good

  • 60 clips for the price of one rack accessory
  • Solid stainless, no plating to fail
  • Locking windproof hook
  • Hangs off a rod, a rack or a rail

Not so good

  • No published weight rating
  • Metal clips can mark very delicate fabrics

Skip this if you hand-wash a lot of fine knitwear. Metal clips leave a mark; a flat mesh dryer does not.

Toplife Clothes Hanger with 10 Clips, Set of 4

Pick 2 · Roughly 20 pairs of socks

A capacity stated in socks is more useful than one stated in pounds, and it is the only listing in this whole category that does it.

Same 4 mm solid stainless construction as the Seropy, in a set of four rather than six.

Larger frame per hanger - 17.7 inches wide - so items hang further apart and dry faster than on a compact clip frame.

Good

  • Publishes a capacity in real units
  • Solid 4 mm stainless
  • Wide frame spaces items apart
  • Windproof hook

Not so good

  • Fewer clips than the 6-pack
  • Metal clips mark fine fabrics

Skip this if you need maximum clips per dollar. The six-pack is better value.

Annaklin Foldable Clip Hanger with 26 Drying Clips

Pick 3 · One hanger that folds away

26 clips on a single folding frame with a 360 degree swivel hook. The one to buy if you want one hanger rather than six.

A single square frame with 26 clips uses one hook instead of six, which is the right shape when you are hanging off a shower rail with limited hook space.

Plastic clips rather than steel. Gentler on delicate fabric, and they will eventually go brittle in direct sun.

The swivel hook lets you turn the whole frame to face the airflow, which is worth more than it sounds when a fan is running.

Good

  • 26 clips on one hook
  • 360 degree swivel
  • Folds flat for storage
  • Plastic clips are gentle on delicates

Not so good

  • No published weight rating
  • Plastic goes brittle in sunlight over time

Skip this if you are drying outdoors in strong sun year-round. Stainless will outlast plastic there.

Common questions

What are clip hangers used for?

Drying socks, underwear, bras and other small items on a hook or rail instead of on a rack bar. It frees up several feet of rack line for bulky items that actually need it.

Do metal clips damage clothes?

Not ordinary cotton. They can mark very fine or delicate fabrics, and plated wire that has started to rust will leave a stain, which is why solid stainless is worth the small extra cost.

How many clips do you need for one load of laundry?

Around 40 to 60 covers the small items in a typical mixed load - socks, underwear and similar. That is one six-pack of ten-clip hangers.

Are clip hangers better than a drying rack?

They are not an alternative, they are a complement. Clips handle small items; a rack handles shirts, towels and bedding. Together they get more out of the same space.
