The best hangers for drying clothes
A hanger you dry on is a different tool from a hanger you store on. Wet fabric is heavy, it slides, and it keeps the shape it dries in.

Hanging a shirt on a hanger is the single most effective thing you can do about air-dried wrinkles, and this site has said so for a while without ever saying which hanger. That is this page. It is also a narrower question than it looks, because a hanger you dry on is doing a different job from a hanger you store on.
A dry shirt in a closet is light, and it already has its shape. A wet one is heavy, it slides, and - the part people miss - cotton sets into whatever shape it is held in while it dries. Get the hanger wrong and you are not just risking a drop; you are pressing a defect into the garment and then drying it in.
Shoulder shape is the whole thing
The failure has a name: shoulder bumps, sometimes called hanger dimples. A narrow hanger ends in two points under the shoulders of the garment. Wet fabric drapes over those points, the weight concentrates there, and the fabric dries with a raised nipple of cloth at each shoulder. On a knit it can outlast several washes.
- Wide spreads the load across more fabric. Roughly 16 to 18 inches suits an adult garment; a 14 inch hanger pinches a shirt narrower than its own shoulders.
- Curved or contoured, so the bearing surface follows the shoulder line instead of ending in a point. This matters more than width on heavy knits.
- Deep front to back gives the weight somewhere to sit. It is why a solid wood hanger holds a jacket's shape better than thin plastic.
Only one product on this page publishes a shoulder width. That is the specification this page ranks on and four of five manufacturers will not give it - which tells you the category is sold on looks and pack count rather than on the thing that decides the outcome.
Strength is the spec that does not matter
The wet-jeans figure is the same one used on folding drying racks, so the two pages agree. A soaked winter coat is the one garment that gets close to a hanger's limit, and it is the only case where the 20 lb rating buys you something.
What each one publishes

| HOUSE DAY | Thickened plastic | 14-18 lb | Not published | 24 |
| Sishynio | High-density plastic | 20 lb | Not published | 10 |

Wet fabric slides
The second failure is a damp top sliding down a glossy hanger and ending in a heap at one end, drying with a crease through the middle. Three surfaces here address it, and they are not equally good: a rubberized coating grips best, a frosted or textured plastic is next, and moulded ridges on the shoulder are the weakest - they work on cotton and let a wet synthetic go.
Where to hang them
- A shower rod is the classic, and it is fine for the first drips - but a closed bathroom is the slowest room in the house to actually dry anything. See drying clothes in a bathroom.
- The wings of a drying rack take hangers on most designs, which is the best of both: the garment keeps its shape and the rack keeps the airflow.
- A door frame or an over-door rack, which turns dead vertical space into hanging space - on over-the-door drying racks.
- Not crammed together. Garments need a gap or they share moisture and all of them dry slowly. The spacing arithmetic is on how much laundry fits on a drying rack.

The picks

Top pick · Wet knits that must not get shoulder bumps
HOUSE DAY Wide-Shoulder Plastic Hangers, 24-Pack
A semi-circular shoulder rather than a flat one, with a published 14 to 18 lb hold - the shape that stops a wet sweater drying with dimples in it.
What the manufacturer publishes
- Open
- Not published
- Folded
- Not applicable
- Drying line
- 24 hangers
- Load capacity
- 14-18 lb per hanger
- Material
- Thickened plastic with a metal hook
Figures from Manufacturer listing on Amazon, retrieved 2026-09-19.
The semi-circular shoulder is the reason to buy this one. A wet garment is heavy and plastic, and it dries into whatever shape it is held in - a narrow flat hanger end concentrates that weight on two points and leaves a dimple that outlasts the wash.
14 to 18 lb is published, which is roughly five times a pair of wet jeans at about 3 lb. That margin is typical and it is why strength is almost never the thing that fails on a drying hanger.
The dual hooks and the tie bar are closet features rather than drying ones. They do no harm, and you are not paying much for them, but they are not why this is the pick.
Good
- Published 14-18 lb hold per hanger
- Semi-circular shoulder, which spreads a wet garment's weight
- Wide shoulder contours to prevent shoulder marks
- 24 to a pack
Not so good
- No published shoulder width, which is the specification this page ranks on
- No published dimensions of any kind
- Dual hooks and a tie bar add bulk you will not use for drying
Skip this if you are drying socks, underwear and small items. Those want clips, not hangers - see [clip hangers](/gear/hangers-and-drying-clips).

Pick 2 · Soaked coats and heavy denim
Sishynio Extra-Wide Shoulder Hangers, 20 lb, 10-Pack
20 lb published - the highest here - on a frosted non-slip surface, for the garments that actually test a hanger.
What the manufacturer publishes
- Open
- Not published
- Folded
- Not applicable
- Drying line
- 10 hangers
- Load capacity
- 20 lb per hanger
- Material
- Thickened high-density plastic, square metal hook
Figures from Manufacturer listing on Amazon, retrieved 2026-09-19.
Twenty pounds is the highest published rating on this page and the only one that has real headroom for a soaked winter coat, which is the one garment that genuinely loads a hanger.
The frosted rather than glossy surface is the detail worth noticing. Wet fabric slides on smooth plastic and a textured surface is what stops a damp shirt collecting at one end of the hanger overnight.
Ten to a pack is the fewest here, and per hanger it is not the cheapest. This is the pack you buy alongside a bulk set, for the heavy items, rather than the one you buy for a whole wardrobe.
Good
- 20 lb published hold - the highest on this page
- Frosted non-slip surface rather than glossy plastic
- Widened shoulder contours and a 360 degree swivel hook
- Trouser rail included
Not so good
- Only 10 per pack, and the highest cost per hanger here
- No published shoulder width or dimensions
- The listing sells it as a closet organizer; drying is a secondary use in its own copy
Skip this if you need to hang a whole wash at once. Ten hangers is a supplement to a bulk pack, not a substitute for one.

Pick 3 · Hanging a whole wash at once
SONGMICS Slim Plastic Hangers, 16.4 in, 50-Pack
The only hanger here that publishes its width - 16.4 inches - at 50 to a pack, which is enough to get an entire load off the rack and onto a rail.
What the manufacturer publishes
- Open
- 16.4"W x 8.4"H, 0.2" thick
- Folded
- Not applicable
- Drying line
- 50 hangers
- Load capacity
- 11 lb per hanger
- Material
- ABS plastic with a metal hook
Figures from Manufacturer listing on Amazon, retrieved 2026-09-19.
Published dimensions, which nothing else on this page manages. 16.4 inches is a standard adult shoulder width, so a shirt hangs at its own width rather than being pinched narrower - and at 0.2 inches thick, fifty of them still fit on a rail.
Eleven pounds is the lowest rating here and it is still more than three times a pair of wet jeans. For shirts, tops and light knits it is not close to a limit.
Non-slip ridges on the shoulders rather than a full coating. That works for cotton and is the weakest anti-slip design here for anything genuinely slippery, like a wet synthetic.
Good
- Published 16.4 in width and 8.4 in height - the only dimensions on this page
- 11 lb published hold
- 50 to a pack, and only 0.2 in thick
- 360 degree swivel hooks and shoulder notches for strap tops
Not so good
- 11 lb is the lowest published rating here
- Ridges rather than a coating, so wet synthetics can still slide
- Slim profile means a narrower bearing surface than the contoured hangers
Skip this if you are drying heavy coats. A slim 11 lb hanger is built for shirts, and the wide contoured ones hold a soaked jacket better.

Pick 4 · Wet silk and synthetics that slide
Nature Smile PVC-Coated Non-Slip Wide-Shoulder Hangers, 20
A rubberized PVC coat over a metal core - the grippiest surface here, and the one that holds a damp slippery top where plastic will not.
What the manufacturer publishes
- Open
- Not published
- Folded
- Not applicable
- Drying line
- 20 hangers
- Load capacity
- Not published
- Material
- PVC-coated metal
Figures from Manufacturer listing on Amazon, retrieved 2026-09-19.
A metal core is stronger than plastic for the same thickness, which is how this stays slim while carrying a coat, and the rubberized coating is genuinely grippier than the frosted and ridged plastics here.
That coating is also the thing to watch. It is the only barrier between a metal core and repeatedly wet fabric, and a coated hanger that gets chipped will eventually rust at the chip - the same failure this site documents on chrome racks and on clothesline wire.
Nature Smile publishes no load rating and no dimensions. For a hanger sold specifically on holding sweaters without bumps, not publishing a shoulder width is a real gap.
Good
- Rubberized PVC coating - the best grip here for wet synthetics
- Metal core, so it stays slim without flexing
- Wide shoulder shape aimed at sweaters and coats
- 20 to a pack
Not so good
- No published load rating and no published dimensions
- A chipped coating exposes a metal core to wet fabric, which is how rust marks start
- The most expensive per hanger on this page
Skip this if the hangers will live permanently loaded with wet laundry. Coated metal is the one material here with a rust failure mode; plastic has none.

Pick 5 · Shirts that go straight into a closet
Utopia Home Solid Wood Contoured Hangers, 20-Pack
Solid wood with contoured shoulders and a 360 degree hook - the best-looking option here and the one least suited to being wet twice a week.
What the manufacturer publishes
- Open
- Not published
- Folded
- Not applicable
- Drying line
- 20 hangers
- Load capacity
- Not published
- Material
- Solid wood with a chrome hook
Figures from Manufacturer listing on Amazon, retrieved 2026-09-19.
Contoured solid wood is the traditional answer for holding a jacket's shape, and it does that better than thin plastic because the bearing surface is deeper front to back.
Wood and repeated wetting are a poor combination, and this page has to say so. Wood absorbs, swells and eventually raises its grain; a finished hanger resists that for a while and an unfinished one does not. Utopia does not state a finish.
It is the cheapest per hanger on the page, which is genuinely surprising for solid wood and is the reason it is here at all rather than as a footnote.
Good
- Solid wood with contoured shoulders - the deepest bearing surface here
- 360 degree chrome hook and cut shoulder notches
- Cheapest per hanger on this page
- No plastic to go brittle
Not so good
- Wood absorbs water; repeated wet loads raise the grain and can mark a light garment
- No finish stated on the listing, so its water tolerance is unknown
- No published load rating or dimensions
Skip this if the garment goes on the hanger soaking wet. Hang it damp after a spin, or use plastic and move it to wood once it is dry.

What we could not tell you
- Shoulder width for four of the five. Only SONGMICS publishes one. It is the figure that decides whether a shirt hangs at its own width, and the category mostly ignores it.
- Load rating for two of the five. The wood and the coated-metal hangers publish nothing.
- Whether the wooden hangers are finished or bare. Utopia does not say, and it decides how they cope with being wet.
- How long a PVC coating survives repeated wetting. That is years of use, and we have not owned these.
Common questions
Can you dry clothes on regular hangers?
Yes, and for shirts and blouses it is the best way to avoid wrinkles - the garment dries in its own shape. Use a wide, curved hanger rather than a narrow one, because wet fabric dries into whatever shape it is held in and a narrow hanger presses shoulder bumps into it.
What causes shoulder bumps from hangers?
A hanger that is too narrow or ends in a point. The garment's weight concentrates on those two points, and because fabric sets as it dries, the dimple is still there when it is dry. A wide contoured shoulder spreads the same weight over a much larger area.
How much weight can a clothes hanger hold?
The hangers here publish 11 lb, 14 to 18 lb and 20 lb. A pair of wet jeans is about 3 lb, so strength is rarely the limit for laundry - only a soaked winter coat gets close. Choose on shoulder shape instead.
Are wooden or plastic hangers better for drying?
Plastic, if the hangers are repeatedly loaded with wet washing. Wood holds a jacket's shape better and looks better, but it absorbs water, swells and can raise its grain, and an unfinished wooden hanger may mark a light garment. Hang damp on wood, soaking on plastic.
Should I use hangers or a drying rack?
Both, for different items. Hangers keep the shape of shirts, blouses and dresses and produce the fewest wrinkles. A rack takes towels, bedding and anything knitted, which should be dried flat rather than hung so it does not stretch.
