Over-the-door racks exist for one situation: you are not allowed to make holes, and you have no floor. In dorms and short leases that describes nearly everybody, and this is the category that quietly does the work.
Read the load rating first
The published ratings on this page are 11 lb, not published, and 2 lb. That is not a small spread. Everything hanging on a door rack is transferred to two hooks bearing on a door edge, and manufacturers rate that conservatively - correctly so.

Projection decides whether the door still works
This is the spec that separates a usable over-door rack from an annoying one. A rack projecting 7.5 inches lets the door open and close normally with laundry on it. One projecting 20 inches means the door is now a drying rack and not a door.
In a studio, where the only spare door may be the bathroom, that difference matters daily.
Getting more out of a door rack
- Use the door that opens least. A rack on a closet door you open twice a day is fine; on a bathroom door it is in the way constantly.
- Add clip hangers. Small items eat bar length. Moving socks and underwear onto clip hangers roughly doubles the useful capacity of a small rack - see hangers and drying clips.
- Open the door. A rack on a closed door in a closed room is in the stillest air in the apartment. Leaving the door ajar helps more than it sounds.
- Do not hang towels on an 11 lb rack. One wet bath towel is about 3 lb and it will hog the whole thing.

11 lb is the honest constraint. A door rack transfers everything to two hooks on a door edge, and 11 lb is roughly a load of shirts or one wet bath towel - not both.
It projects 7.5 inches, so the door still opens and closes with laundry on it, which the deeper over-door racks do not manage.

Reinforced support arms are the difference between a door rack that stays square under load and one that gradually splays.
Whitmor publishes no load capacity for this rack. On a door-hung product, where the failure mode is the hooks rather than the frame, that is the number we would most want to see.
The integrated hooks take hangers, which turns it into a place to hang shirts to finish drying rather than only a bar rack.

Two pounds is roughly four pairs of wet socks. A single wet t-shirt weighs about a pound; a wet bath towel is closer to four.

Common questions
How much weight can an over-the-door drying rack hold?
Much less than a wall rack. The ones here publish 11 lb and 2 lb, with one publishing no figure at all. Everything is carried by two hooks on a door edge.
Do over-the-door racks damage doors?
Not usually, if the hook fits the door thickness properly. Hooks that are too wide rock on the edge, and that is what marks paint over time.
Will an over-the-door rack fit any door?
Most fit doors around 1.5 to 1.75 inches thick. Thicker solid or fire doors often will not take one, so measure the edge before ordering.
Can you dry a full load on an over-the-door rack?
No. At 11 lb it holds a partial load at most. Use one alongside another rack, or as the dedicated home for shirts while a floor rack takes the bulky items.
