How to air-dry clothes without wrinkles

This is the complaint that sends people back to a tumble dryer, and it is the most fixable problem on this entire site - because it is caused by a two-minute window rather than by the drying method.

Why air-dried clothes wrinkle

Cotton and linen fibers are flexible when wet and rigid when dry. Whatever shape the fabric is in as the water leaves is the shape it holds. A tumble dryer keeps everything moving, so nothing has the chance to set - the fabric is in a different position every second.

A rack does not move. If a shirt comes out of the machine twisted into a rope and goes onto the rack still twisted, it dries as a rope, and no amount of patience afterwards will undo it without an iron.

The corollary is the useful part: the wrinkles are decided in the first two minutes, and after that you are only preserving whatever shape you set.

The six steps

1. Unload the machine immediately. A spun load sitting in a warm drum for two hours is a load of set-in creases, and this single habit accounts for most of the difference between households.
2. Shake each item hard, once. Ten seconds a garment. This is the manual version of what tumbling does, applied at the only moment it matters.
3. Smooth the seams, hems and plackets with your hand. Double-thickness areas hold the deepest creases, and flattening them wet is the whole job.
4. Hang it open, never folded over a bar. A fold is a crease you are choosing to set - and it also halves the drying speed of that section.
5. Use hangers for shirts. A shirt on a hanger dries in its own shape. On a bar it dries in the bar's shape.
6. Do not overfill the rack. Garments pressed against each other set against each other. Spacing serves drying time and wrinkles at once.

What makes it worse

• A high spin speed. Faster spinning removes more water, which is good, and packs the load harder against the drum wall, which sets deeper creases. On delicate or linen items a lower spin is the better trade.
• Overloading the washer. Clothes need room to move in the wash or they come out already twisted.
• Drying too fast. Direct sun or a heated rack sets whatever shape you gave it more firmly and sooner. Get the shape right first, then dry fast.
• Leaving items on the rack after they are dry. Nothing improves, and folds from the bar set harder over another day.

By fabric

Knitwear is a different problem entirely: it does not wrinkle, it stretches, and it must be dried flat. That is covered on sweater drying racks. Bedding is covered on drying racks for sheets and bedding.

Wrinkles are not stiffness

These get confused constantly and they have different causes and different fixes. A wrinkle is a crease set by drying in a folded position. Stiffness is the fibers setting flat because nothing agitated them, plus detergent residue hardening as the water evaporates. You can have either without the other, and the stiffness fixes are on air-drying without stiffness.
