Manufacturers publish linear feet. Nobody publishes what that means in shirts. Here is the conversion, with the assumptions stated so you can adjust them for your own laundry.
The conversion table
| Item | Hung as | Line used | Items per 16 ft | Items per 46 ft |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T-shirt | Folded over a bar | 12 in | 16 | 46 |
| Dress shirt | Folded over a bar | 14 in | 13 | 39 |
| Pair of jeans | Folded over a bar | 16 in | 12 | 34 |
| Bath towel | Folded over a bar | 24 in | 8 | 23 |
| Double bed sheet | Doubled over a bar | 48 in | 4 | 11 |
| Pair of socks | Over a bar or clipped | 3 in | 64 | 184 |
Those figures assume a two-inch gap between items. Remove the gap and the numbers roughly double, and so does the drying time - which is the trade this whole table exists to make visible.
The arithmetic
What this means for buying
- 16 linear feet - about a third of a full load with spacing. One person's mid-week wash.
- 23 to 30 feet - a modest load, or a full load packed tighter than ideal.
- 46 feet - a genuine full washer load with spacing.
- 59 feet - a full load with room, or a load plus bedding.
Two-thirds of the racks we surveyed publish no linear-foot figure at all. Where that is the case, count the bars in the listing photo and multiply by the rack's published width - it is a rough proxy, and it is better than the alternative of finding out after delivery.

Every figure is the manufacturer’s own, read from its listing on 2026-09-02. Where a cell says not published, that specification is genuinely absent - we do not estimate one. How we work.

Top pick · A full washer load in one go
Honey-Can-Do Heavy-Duty Gullwing Clothes Drying Rack, 50 lb
46 linear feet and a 50 lb rating - the rack that takes an entire load without a second trip, if you can spare the floor.
What the manufacturer publishes

- 56.89"D x 23.82"W x 37.8"H
- Folded
- Folds flat (depth not published)
- Drying line
- 46 linear feet
- Load capacity
- 50 lb

Open, this is nine and a half square feet - about the size of a two-seat sofa laid on the floor. That is the price of doing a whole load at once, and in a studio it is a real price.
46 feet of line is enough for a standard washer load with the shirts spaced rather than crammed, which is the difference between four hours and nine.
The wings fold down when you only need the middle section, so it can run at half width on a normal day and full width on laundry day.
Good
- 46 linear feet - the most usable line per dollar here
- 50 lb rating handles wet towels and jeans
- Dedicated shoe bars, which most racks skip
- Wings fold independently for narrow days
Not so good
- Nearly 5 feet wide open
- 7.3 lb, so it is not the one you carry between rooms
Skip this if your apartment cannot give up a 5 foot span for four hours. Measure the actual gap before you buy this.

Pick 2 · The most line per rack
SONGMICS Clothes Drying Rack, Foldable, 2 Gullwings
59 feet of drying line, the largest published figure in this set, on a frame that folds flat and carries 20 windproof hooks.
What the manufacturer publishes
- Open
- 19.7"D x 71.7"W x 40.4"H
- Folded
- Folds flat (depth not published)
- Drying line
- 59 linear feet
- Load capacity
- 33 lb
- Material
- Steel with rust-resistant coating, PP plastic
Figures from Manufacturer listing on Amazon, retrieved 2026-09-02.
Six feet wide with both wings out. It is the widest rack here and it buys you 59 feet of line, 13 more than the Honey-Can-Do gullwing.
The load rating does not scale with the line, though: 33 lb against the Honey-Can-Do's 50. More line, less weight per foot - fine for shirts, tighter for towels.
The 20 windproof hooks are the detail that makes it worth using on a balcony, where an unhooked garment ends up on someone else's railing.
Good
- 59 linear feet, the most published here
- 20 windproof hooks included
- Only 5.7 lb despite the span
- Rust-resistant coating rated for outdoor use
Not so good
- 33 lb capacity is modest for a rack this size
- Nearly 6 feet wide fully open
Skip this if you dry heavy items. Spreading 33 lb across 59 feet works; putting six wet bath towels on it does not.

Pick 3 · Studios and dorms
Honey-Can-Do 3-Tier Compact Clothes Drying Rack, 16 ft
The best floor-to-line ratio of any rack here: 16 feet of hanging on a 2 square foot footprint, and it stores in a 4.3 inch slot.
What the manufacturer publishes
- Open
- 13.97"D x 21.25"W x 42.13"H
- Folded
- 21.3"L x 20.6"W x 4.3"H
- Drying line
- 16 linear feet across 11 bars
- Load capacity
- 44.1 lb
- Material
- Metal
Figures from Manufacturer listing on Amazon, retrieved 2026-09-02.
Two square feet of floor is roughly a bath mat. That is the entire footprint, and it still takes 16 feet of line, because the tiers go up rather than out.
The 4.3 inch folded depth is the number that matters in a rental. That fits behind a door or between a washer and a wall, which a gullwing rack folded to 8 or 10 inches does not.
The trade-off is bar length. Eleven short bars suit shirts, underwear and socks; a bath towel hung full-width will drape over two tiers and slow both of them down.
Good
- 16 linear feet from a 2 sq ft footprint
- Folds to 4.3 inches, so it genuinely stores flat
- 44.1 lb rating is generous for the size
- Arrives assembled
Not so good
- Short bars - full-size towels and sheets do not hang cleanly
- Tiered stacking means the lower rows dry slowest without air movement
Skip this if you are mostly drying towels and bedding. Long, heavy items want a wide gullwing, not a tall tower.
Common questions
How many clothes fit on a drying rack?
A 16 linear foot rack holds about 16 t-shirts or 8 bath towels with spacing. A 46 foot rack holds roughly a full washer load of mixed cotton.
How much drying line does one load of laundry need?
Around 45 to 50 linear feet for a full load with garments spaced apart. A modest load of shirts and socks needs closer to 24 feet.
Can you overload a drying rack?
Structurally, only past its published weight rating. Practically, you overload it long before that: once garments touch, the contact areas stay wet and drying time roughly doubles.
Why do drying racks not publish linear feet?
There is no standard for measuring it, so a rack can count every bar including ones a full-length shirt covers two of. Where a figure is published we print it, and we treat it as a comparison number rather than a promise.
