Whitmor drying racks, compared

Twenty-seven feet on 2.98 square feet works out at 9.1 feet of line per square foot of floor. For comparison, the Honey-Can-Do six-tier manages 8.5 and a wide gullwing manages about 4.9. On the one ratio this site has measured across the whole category, this is the leader.

The top tier is a shelf rather than a set of bars, which is the detail that makes it more than a bar count. A knitted garment laid flat there dries without the shoulder stretch a bar causes, so one rack covers both jobs.

It costs meaningfully more than Whitmor's own 25-foot model, which is the unusual part: here the extra money buys both more line and a smaller footprint. In this category that combination normally goes the other way.

Two feet less line than the 27-foot model and half a square foot more floor, which works out at 7.2 feet per square foot against 9.1. That is still a good ratio - better than any gullwing - and it is the trade you are accepting for the lower price.

The same accordion mechanism and the same flat top shelf. Functionally these two racks are the same design at two sizes, and Whitmor sells them as separate products rather than as variants.

The wood-effect finish is the only cosmetic difference worth mentioning, and it is a coating on metal rather than actual wood - which matters if you were buying it expecting the rust behavior of a wooden rack.

The construction claims are the most specific Whitmor makes anywhere: thickened metal tubes, a steel X-frame, PP connectors and non-slip feet. On a rack that will hold wet towels, frame stiffness is a real differentiator and this is the one that talks about it.

It is also the only three-tier Whitmor here that publishes no linear-foot figure. Its two siblings print 25 and 27 feet; this one prints nothing, on a 2.29 square foot footprint that sits between them in price.

Six inches of depth is the entire product. That is 1.08 square feet of floor, less than half what a compact tower takes, and it is the difference between fitting in the slot beside a washing machine and not fitting anywhere.

What you give up is capacity and, more awkwardly, information. Whitmor publishes a size and the words "Mounting Type: Freestanding" and nothing else - no linear feet, no load rating, not even a material.

Buy it for the gap it fits rather than for what it holds. As the only rack in a small home it will disappoint; as the second rack that lives in dead space, it earns its place.
