IKEA drying racks, and the alternatives you can actually order
IKEA's racks are good and inconvenient. Here is what compares to them if you are not near a store.

This page exists because searching for an IKEA drying rack on most US retailers returns everything except an IKEA drying rack. That is not a supply problem; IKEA distributes through its own channels, and third-party listings using the name are other brands.
What IKEA's racks are known for
- Low prices, generally at or below the cheapest steel racks on general retailers.
- Simple folding frames rather than multi-tier towers, in the accordion and wing formats.
- In-store or IKEA-site purchase only in the US, which for most people is the deciding constraint.
- Flat-pack shipping, so a large rack arrives in a small box.
The three closest things you can order
Each of these matches one thing IKEA's range is bought for: the cheap steel frame, the small-footprint tower, and the wooden rack that does not look like laundry equipment.

Every figure is the manufacturer’s own, read from its listing on 2026-09-02. Where a cell says not published, that specification is genuinely absent - we do not estimate one. How we work.
When the trip is worth it
If you are going anyway, IKEA's racks are good value and you can see the folded size in person, which is the specification almost nobody publishes. If you are not going anyway, the shipping and the trip cost more than the difference in price, and the racks below are directly comparable.
How to compare any rack against one you saw in a store
- Write down the open footprint - depth by width. Everything else is secondary.
- Write down the folded depth if you can measure it in the aisle. This is the number online listings omit.
- Note the material. Coated steel, stainless, aluminum or wood - see drying rack materials.
- Count the bars and note the spacing. Wider spacing dries faster; more bars hold more.

Top pick · The cheapest thing worth owning
Amazon Basics Foldable Portable Metal Clothes Drying Rack
A plain chrome accordion rack that has outlasted a decade of fancier designs. The one to buy if you are not sure air-drying will stick.
What the manufacturer publishes
- Open
- 14.5"D x 29.5"W x 41.8"H
- Folded
- Folds flat (depth not published)
- Drying line
- Not published
- Load capacity
- 32 lb
- Material
- Carbon steel, chrome finish
Figures from Manufacturer listing on Amazon, retrieved 2026-09-02.
Three square feet open, and the accordion frame collapses to something you can carry one-handed. At 4.5 lb it moves from bathroom to bedroom without a second thought.
The 32 lb rating is the lowest of the standing racks here, and it is honest rather than stingy: one washer load of shirts is nowhere near 32 lb wet, but a load of wet towels can be.
Amazon does not publish a linear-foot figure for this one, so we do not print one. Bar count and spacing are what you can see in the listing photos.
Good
- Cheapest rack here that is not obviously flimsy
- 4.5 lb, so it moves around the apartment easily
- Chrome finish resists the rust that kills cheap racks in bathrooms
Not so good
- 32 lb is the lowest capacity in this group
- No published drying-line length
- Accordion bars sag in the middle under wet jeans
Skip this if you do a full family load at a time. This is a one-or-two-person rack and it will not pretend otherwise.

Pick 2 · Studios and dorms
Honey-Can-Do 3-Tier Compact Clothes Drying Rack, 16 ft
The best floor-to-line ratio of any rack here: 16 feet of hanging on a 2 square foot footprint, and it stores in a 4.3 inch slot.
What the manufacturer publishes
- Open
- 13.97"D x 21.25"W x 42.13"H
- Folded
- 21.3"L x 20.6"W x 4.3"H
- Drying line
- 16 linear feet across 11 bars
- Load capacity
- 44.1 lb
- Material
- Metal
Figures from Manufacturer listing on Amazon, retrieved 2026-09-02.
Two square feet of floor is roughly a bath mat. That is the entire footprint, and it still takes 16 feet of line, because the tiers go up rather than out.
The 4.3 inch folded depth is the number that matters in a rental. That fits behind a door or between a washer and a wall, which a gullwing rack folded to 8 or 10 inches does not.
The trade-off is bar length. Eleven short bars suit shirts, underwear and socks; a bath towel hung full-width will drape over two tiers and slow both of them down.
Good
- 16 linear feet from a 2 sq ft footprint
- Folds to 4.3 inches, so it genuinely stores flat
- 44.1 lb rating is generous for the size
- Arrives assembled
Not so good
- Short bars - full-size towels and sheets do not hang cleanly
- Tiered stacking means the lower rows dry slowest without air movement
Skip this if you are mostly drying towels and bedding. Long, heavy items want a wide gullwing, not a tall tower.

Pick 3 · A rack you leave out
Home-it Wooden Clothes Drying Rack, Collapsible Bamboo
Bamboo instead of coated steel - the one here that looks like furniture rather than laundry equipment, at 35 lb rated.
What the manufacturer publishes
- Open
- 14.5"D x 29.5"W x 41.75"H
- Folded
- Folds flat (depth not published)
- Drying line
- Not published
- Load capacity
- 35 lb
- Material
- Bamboo
Figures from Manufacturer listing on Amazon, retrieved 2026-09-02.
Identical footprint to the Amazon Basics chrome rack, in bamboo. In a studio where the rack lives in the main room rather than a laundry area, that difference is the whole purchase.
Bamboo will not rust, but it will absorb water. Left permanently in a steamy bathroom it can spot and, over a long enough time, grow mold in the joints. Dry rooms only.
Arrives assembled, which for a wooden rack with a lot of dowels is worth something.
Good
- Looks like furniture, not a drying rack
- 35 lb rating, above the chrome equivalent
- No rust, ever
- Ships assembled
Not so good
- Bamboo absorbs moisture - not for permanently damp rooms
- No published linear-foot figure
Skip this if the rack will live in a bathroom. Wood and permanently wet air are a bad long-term match.
Common questions
Does Amazon sell IKEA drying racks?
Not directly. IKEA distributes through its own stores and website in the US, so third-party listings using the name are generally other brands.
What is comparable to an IKEA drying rack?
A basic chrome accordion rack matches the price and format most closely. A compact tiered tower matches the small-footprint models, and a bamboo frame matches the wooden ones.
Are IKEA drying racks good?
We have not handled them and will not claim to have. What we can say is that the format they sell - simple, cheap, flat-folding steel - is a sound format, and the alternatives here are built the same way.
